CVE-2026-76163

HIGH 7.5

Published 2026-09-16 · Last modified 2026-09-17

If BIND is loaded with a "`named.conf`" file that contains no global "`options`" block, an attacker can send a query of QTYPE TKEY which may cause an assertion failure and subsequent unexpected program exit. This issue affects BIND 9 versions 9.20.0 through 9.20.27, 9.21.0 through 9.21.25, and 9.20.9-S1 through 9.20.27-S1.

What an attacker needs

  • ✓Access: Reachable over the network — no local access needed
  • ✓Privileges: No account or privileges required
  • ✓User interaction: No user interaction needed
  • ✓Complexity: No special conditions — reliably repeatable

✓ lowers the bar for an attacker · ⚠ raises it

    • workaround: To mitigate this issue, ensure that the BIND configuration file (`named.conf`) includes a global `options` block. If no such block exists, adding an empty `options {}` block will prevent the vulnerability. After modifying `named.conf`, the `named` service must be restarted for the changes to take effect. This may temporarily interrupt DNS resolution.
